Hi Folks

Apologies in advance but this is a weather winge.

Is it me or has it been windy in this country for the last year??!!! After getting hold of a Spit modded with carbon rods in the wings and a Trojan T28 set of radio gear with a rudder mod I got hold of a lipo battery and waited for good weather to maiden it.

And waited

And waited

And waited...

In the meantime I chopped up the PZ decals so that they read XT - L which is the Battle of Britain Memorial flight Spit.
{Geek alert} the markings are L-XT on the port side and XT-L on the starboard side {Geek alert over}

And waited

And waited

Finally the forecast for today was winds less than 6mph here in S London so despite finishing a nightshift I grabbed a short sleep then went out to the field.

Got there and discovered it was a bit windier than 6mph. Had a go anyway warming up with my Typhoon which was ok but had a bumpy landing. Then decided to have a go with the Spit as I had waited so long.

Well it was only the lipo-i.e the extra power-that saved it. It was blown all over the place and I thought I was going to loose it. It didn't help that it appeared to be tail heavy (btw folks is this what happens with a lighter lipo installed???) but eventual got it down in one piece

Now is it me or has the weather in the UK just been rubbish for flying for what seems like the last 12 months? Or is it that since I have been flying (or trying to) I notice it more?!?

Just wondered if the more seasoned flyers have noticed this? I know there have been some reasonable days but usually when I am at work!!!

OK whinge over it is safe to come out now;)

Off to grimace at more weather reports

Malcolm

Your right, the weather in the UK has been totally rubbish. The last few summers have been a let down. I was flying my Spitfire in 10mph winds today, it can be done but where the foamies suffer is gusts of wind, if it's gusty the spitfire is a real handfull but if the wind is pretty constant then they fly ok.

Your right Malcolm, the weather in this country is totally crap to say the least. I have a daily weather winge to my mrs and your spot on in that you just notice the wind a lot more now you have a plane. Its been crap here since adam was a lad! Another winge, while were on the subject of weather is the forecast!! Im getting a bit sick of the amount of times the xc weather link gets my hopes up for an afternoon of flying, only to change to 10 -15mph 6 hours later!
Anyway, fingers crossed for next weekend. We can only live in hope!!

Morning, so what RC plane would handle higher winds that we have quite often ? something that can handle 9 - 15 MPH:confused:

I guess you need a heavier balsa plane, this are less susceptible to windy conditions but then 15mph is the limit for these.

The wind has definitely been stronger this year than in the past 10 years. I've been in "real" aviation for that time and I've never known so many days to be as windy has it has been this year.

Luckily for me, I have access to a largish field totally surrounded by large trees so if I'm flying the Cub I can stay below the tree line and don't feel any effect of the wind. This field is too small for any of the other aircraft but I have access to a real airfield with a 1800 meter tarmac runway for the odd occasion of an evening when the wind is calm!!

The only issue is, more weight means less issues with wind, but need bigger power plant, bigger space and more speed.....

Ditto............

I have the same feeling about the current weather.

Last flew the Spitifire, in low winds , about a month ago.
It's been gathering dust since then.

It flys well, but the all up weight is a limitation with the foamies.

I think the only way for more trips to the field is to buy a heavier plane.
The Sebart Angel is a lot heavier (and expensive!) but I plan to purchase the "30" size next spring.

(I thought it was just me moaning about the climate!)

I just ordered a Balsa Sport plane to play with lol.

I gave up waiting for the wind to drop to take any of my aircraft flying so I decided to take advantage of the strong wind and took my kite flying. It was getting on to be too windy for that!!!!

Kite flying?I'm sure your one of these matcho "flying wing" types with a scateboard strapped to his feet claiming "it's fun" LOL :Dnot on my areodrome young man! Are you part of the famous five? I'm sure some of these young fellows are still in shorts don't you know!

Anyway back to that work thing....

Winds are again 8-15mph in my area, I wish we would get a break in the weather.

Well the operations guys are giving the same forcast to the whole wing!
Time to go back to the building hanger......if it's not the wind it's raining by the bucket......

At least the hun can't find there targets in this stuff......pip pip!
